How Greenwich rats communicate using pheromones

Animals don’t communicate in the same way that humans do. They don’t have an audible language that enables them to relay messages to each other. Different species have found different ways to communicate with each other. Greenwich rats use pheromones to relay their messages to each other.

What are pheromones?
Pheromones are chemical substances produced by Connecticut animals. When released, it affects the behaviour of organisms of the same species in the vicinity. There are a variety of different pheromones. This enables the organism to relay whether it wants to mate, needs food or any other message that it needs to convey.

Types of pheromones
1. The Primer pheromones. This pheromone is released by the female when she is ready to mate. It will let male rats in the vicinity know that there is a viable female close by. The male will then release its own pheromones to convey that they are interested. The pheromones released by the male rats originate from an organ in the brain called the Vomeronasal. This powerful pheromone can lead to miscarriage in some rats. It will also lead to the rapid sexual maturity of female rats.
2. The Releaser Pheromone is generally found in the urine of the Connecticut rats. It is their way of marking their territory. This will other rats know that they are already nesting there. It could also signal a nursing female.
3. The information Pheromone. This is how Greenwich rats communicate with each other. They are able to use this pheromone to convey how they are feeling. They can also use it to tell other rats what they have eaten and to find out if another rat might be aggressive towards them.

How do they work?
Odorant molecules that are released by the Greenwich rat interact with receptors that are present in the nose. When the odorant binds to the receptor, it sends a signal to the brain.

What does this mean for us?
By knowing what types of pheromones are used by Connecticut rats in order to communicate, scientists are able to replicate the pheromones. This means that it can be used to trap rats in order to relocate them to a different area. It also means that we might be close to a way of getting rats out of your home permanently. You will be able to purchase rat pheromones that can be dripped in your home to signal that there is already another rat occupying the space.
